What Is A Unix Linux Operating System?

Developed in the year 1969, Unix is a computer operating system. In the recent times, various offshoots of Unix system have been developed by AT & T and other commercial vendors and organizations. Besides the certified Unix systems there are many Unix-like operating systems such as Linux and BSD derivatives. The Linux is also known as Unix-Linux.

Unix Linux is an advanced operating system. Linus Torvalds, a student at the University of Helsinki, was interested in Minix. He faced a few problems using this small Unix-like system due to which he decided to create a more superior system. The new superior system was called Linux and it exceeded the standards of Minix system. Thus, the popular operating systems of present times, Unix-Linux was created initially as a hobby.

The work on the creation of this Unix-Linux operating system began in the year 1991 and by the end of 1994 Linus brought out version 1.0 of the Linux kernel. Unix-Linux operating system is one of the most salient examples of free software and open source development. Its underlying source code can be freely modified and redistributed. The most important feature of Unix-Linux operating system is that the development and distribution of the operating system is based on the General Public License. Due to this reason the system is easily accessible to end-users. This also makes the system transparent. Some of the advantages of this system are its functionality, adaptability, robustness.

Major software corporations such as IBM, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and Novell have supported Linux for use in their servers. Two major vendors that have come up with newer versions of this operating system are Red Hat and Novell Inc.

Unix-Linux operating system can be used on a wide variety of computer hardwares such as desktop computers, supercomputers, mobile phones and routers. Through the process of embedding, Linux can be incorporated directly into microchips as well. Linux is available in various versions or distributions. A person can choose the version of Linux that is easy to install, configure and use. Although the Linux operating system has evolved gradually over the last two decades, it still is not as popular as Microsoft's Windows operating system with small businesses and home users. Many bloggers have revealed that Linux is the greatest operating system but it is still not ready for mass consumption. This is because many computer appendages are not adapted for it.
