LPI Linux Certification For Individuals

Many organizations and corporations provide Linux certification. For the purpose of ensuring the efficiency of an IT professional in the field of Linux operating systems, certification is needed. The Linux Professional Institute Inc (LPI) is one of the organizations that provide certification for the Linux system administrations and programmers. It is a non-profit Canadian institute which was founded in 1999. Its headquarter is located near Toronto. It is regarded as the premier organization in giving out assistance in the professional use of Linux and other Linux-related operating softwares.

The various exams conducted by the institute cover a wide range of topics from Linux. These exams are conducted across the world and are translated into a number of languages. The Linux certification provided by LPI provides a certification that can be used to indicate one's competency at the level of handling Linux and Linux-related softwares.

There are three levels in the LPI Linux certification program. They are termed as LPIC-1, LPIC-2 and LPIC-3. Each level has two exams and a candidate has to pass both the exams to gain the certification for that particular level. The first level is the Junior Level Administration (LPIC-1). A candidate is required to pass two exams, namely 101 and 102, to get the LPI level 1 certification. The 101 exam was previously divided into two exams. These comprised questions on the RPM Package Manager and Deb (file format). Now, these two have been merged into a single exam. The level 1 certification ensures that the candidate is able to perform basic maintenance tasks and can connect a workstation to a network. It also makes a person capable of installing and configuring a workstation using the Linux operating system.

The Advanced Level Administration (LPIC-2) is the second level of LPI Linux certification course. It is designed to make sure that a particular candidate can administer a small to medium-sized site containing Microsoft and Linux servers and can supervise assistants. For this, one is required to pass two exams, 201 and 202. One is required to clear LPIC-1 to take this examination. These two exams at this level can be taken in any order.

The third level is the Senior Level Administration, LPIC-3. This level consists of exams named 301 and 302. This certification program initiates the completion of the LPI Linux certification program.s The Linux Professional Institute Inc does not administer these exams. These are administered through one of their training partners. The exams are, normally, in the format of multiple choice questions. Most exams are administered through Thompson Prometric or Pearson VUE test centers. LPI Linux certification establishes one's proficiency in handling Linux and Linux-related softwares and helps one to grow in one's career.
