Different Linux Certification Courses

Linux certification is a term popularly used for the certification of Linux operating system. The certification needs to be conducted by a well-recognized organization so that the IT industry can rely on it. The benefit of Linux certification is that it ensures that IT professionals have a means to demonstrate their Linux and Linux related software skills to their employers. This certification also ensures that the customers can know whom to turn to for Linux support. The certification also enhances marketing and provides other types of employment to individuals skilled in handling different aspects of Linux operating systems.

There are various IT vendors and organizations that provide Linux certifications. Some of them are Red Hat, Novell, SAIR and Linux Professional Institute. These organizations have different programs for Linux certification and the course structure varies accordingly. According to the industry, the best organizations providing this certification are Red Hat and Linux Professional Institute.

Linux Professional Institute has three levels, called LPIC-1, LPIC-2 and LPIC-3, for its Linux certification program. A candidate is supposed to pass two exams at each level. The first level is the Junior Level Administration (LPIC-1). A candidate has to pass two exams, namely 101 and 102, to get the LPI level 1 certification. The 101 exam was, previously, made up of two exams. The examination questions were based on the RPM Package Manager and Deb(a file format). Recently, these two have been merged into a single exam. The level 1 certification ensures that the candidate can work at the command line, can perform basic maintenance tasks and can install and configure a workstation and connect it to a network.

The Advanced Level Administration (LPIC-2) is the second level of certification. It has been designed with the objective of making sure that a particular candidate can administer a small to medium-sized site containing Microsoft and Linux servers and can supervise assistants. The 201 and 202 exams for this level can be taken in any order.

The Senior Level Administration LPIC-3 culminates LPI's certification program. It consists of the 301 and 302 exam.

Another famous certification course is provided by Red Hat. Red Hat Linux certification programs include the following certifications: Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT), Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) and Red Hat Certified Security Specialist (RHCSS). The first level (RHCT) certification program emphasizes on single-system administration. The next level (RHCE) focuses on security and services and thereby expands the RHCT program. The RHCA certification requires an additional five endorsements to the RHCE. This certification ensures that a student is able to deploy systems at the enterprise level. Red Hat organizes a four-day class that concludes with the exam on the fifth day. The last certification, the Red Hat Certified Security Specialist certification, requires two endorsement tests from the RHCA and and additional SELinux test.
